2007-2008 Amrit Kaur Ahluwalia Memorial Outstanding Paper Prize

Center for South Asia Studies, UC Berkeley 

The Center for South Asia Studies welcomes entries for its 2007-2008 Amrit Kaur Ahluwalia Memorial Outstanding Paper Prize for work that addresses some aspect of Sikhism: Sikh history, language and literature, religion, culture, art or music.  The deadline for the paper prize is March 20, 2008. Winners will be contacted and prizes will be announced by April 11, 2008. 

Prize Presentation

The prize will be awarded at the annual Amrit Kaur Ahluwalia Memorial Lecture to be held on April 19, 2008 at UC Berkeley. 

Description of the Award

The amount of the award will be $500.  

Eligibility

  1. Full time graduate students or undergraduates in their senior year.
  2. Students must have been registered as a full time student at any accredited university during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Guidelines

  1. Faculty may nominate students, or students may enter their own papers.
  2. For each entry submit:
    1. All submitted papers must be no longer than thirty typewritten (double-spaced) pages of text, exclusive of the title page, endnotes, and bibliography.
    2. All pages, except for the title page, must be numbered, and all endnotes must conform to standard historical formats.
    3. The author's identity is to appear nowhere on the paper.
    4. A separate, unattached page should accompany the paper, identifying the author (along with the title of the paper) and providing that person's home address, telephone number, e-mail address (if available), college affiliation, graduating year and status (undergraduate or graduate student).
    5. A one-page (250-word) abstract must accompany each submission. Abstract of winning paper will be published in all announcements of competition results.
  3. Papers are to demonstrate scholarly competence in a subject matter relevant to Sikh or Punjabi studies.

Submit either:

  1. In an e-mail, electronic files of 1) the paper, 2) the page with identifying information, and 3) the abstract attached as Word files. (This is the preferred method of submission.) OR
  2. For persons who lack e-mail capability, four (4) printed copies of each of the following: the paper, the page with identifying information, and the abstract.
