(Jayaprakash Narayan, a leader in India's struggle for independence) following Indira Gandhi's 1975 declaration of a national "Emergency." Indira Gandhi's 1977 announcement that the postponed national elections would be held within two months galvanized her fragmented opposition to form a united Janata (People's) Party. This film illustrates the Janata Party's efforts to mobilize public-support efforts that culminated in the Party's stunning victory over Indira Gandhi's Congress Party in the 1977 elections.
