Assistant Professor of Modern South Asian History

The Department of History at the UW-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2010 at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Modern South Asian History, in any research specialization addressing the nineteenth and/or twentieth centuries.

Applicants should hold a doctorate or anticipate its completion by the time of the appointment. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of creativity and excellence in research. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate surveys, specialized upper-division courses and graduate seminars in the history of modern South Asia. We are particularly interested in candidates who will actively develop our South Asian history program, while adding to the university¿s longstanding prominence in the study of this area. Wisconsin-Madison houses the Title VI-supported Center for South Asia, as well as the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, in addition to excellent library resources for research in the area.

Stanford - South Asia Professorship

Stanford University seeks to develop its program in South Asian studies in the humanities and social sciences. As a first step, Stanford invites applications from senior scholars for the Reliance-Dhirubhai Ambani Professorship. The appointee must have a strong record of research and teaching in a humanistic or social scientific field focused on South Asia (including but not limited to economics, anthropology, political science, history, art history, literature, religious studies, and film). He or she should also have a demonstrated capacity for academic leadership and program-building. Stanford is committed to developing its South Asian program through additional faculty recruitment across disciplines. Applicants will also be expected to teach courses in South Asia at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Lehman College - Assistant/Associate Professor

Rice University - Part-time Lecturer

Rice University seeks a Part-time Lecturer to teach one Hindi language course per semester in its Center for Study of Languages. Candidates should demonstrate a sound understanding of modern communicative approaches to language-teaching and learning, including task-based proficiency-oriented instruction, and show a record of good teaching at the university level. Other desirable qualifications for this position are: the ability to develop and teach Hindi courses for special purposes and an understanding of the uses of modern technology, including multimedia applications, for the purpose of teaching and learning languages. Applicants should demonstrate at least near-native fluency in Hindi and hold an MA degree or its equivalent. The appointment is at the rank of part time Lecturer, Beginning on January, 2008

North Carolina State University - Tenure-track Position in Hindi

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at NC State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Hindi/Urdu, beginning August 16, 2008 . Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in Hindi /Urdu, a PhD focusing on literature/cultural studies completed at the time of appointment; and proof of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. Candidates with cross-disciplinary interests are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in Hindi-Urdu at the intermediate and advanced levels and literature/culture classes in translation in the World Literature curriculum. NCSU is a founding member of the North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies (NCSU, Duke, UNC-CH), a Title VI National Resource Center for the study of South Asia ; the Center is a cooperative which integrates faculty, curricula, and programming at all levels across the campuses. Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature: South Asian Cinema

The Cinema Studies Program and the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Washington
invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the area of South Asian Film, beginning in September 2008. Applicants must complete the Ph.D. in Cinema Studies or a related field by date of appointment. Preferred candidates will demonstrate the capacity to offer survey courses in film history, theory and genre, as well as courses in the cultural and aesthetic histories of one or more South Asian cinema traditions. They will also demonstrate an interest in cross-cultural comparisons, as well as in teaching a large lecture class. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Research Fellowship, Spring 2008
Program in South Asian Studies, Princeton University

The Program in South Asian Studies at Princeton University invites applications for a Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) research fellowship in South Asian Studies.  One fellow will be appointed for the spring 2008 semester (February 1-June 30, 2008), during which he or she will be expected to teach one course, conditional on approval of a Princeton department and the Dean of the Faculty, and to participate in South Asia-related academic activities on campus.

This fellowship is open to scholars in all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, with preference given to the fields of economics and political science.  A doctoral degree is required, though exceptions may be made for persons with exceptional experience, achievement, and eminence in their fields.
 
The one-semester salary will be between $24,000 and $34,750, depending on qualifications and experience, and the fellow will be eligible for University health plans.  The fellow will also be reimbursed up to $1800 for the cost of economy-class, round-trip travel from his or her place of permanent residence, and provided with a modest research fund.
 
The fellow will be expected to be in residence at Princeton at all times, devoting the major portion of his or her time to research and teaching, and to the activities of the Program in South Asian Studies.  The fellow will enjoy full access to the University’s library, archival, and computing resources.

Graduate Student Research Opportunity

Dr. Kathleen O’Reilly (Department of Geography, Texas A&M University) seeks a graduate student research assistant to assist for two years on an NSF-sponsored project entitled “Women Fieldworkers in NGOs (#0523985). The research explores the process of implementing women's development for its effects on the lives of women employed by north Indian NGOs. The research involves an intensive analysis of the work of NGOs in Rajasthan , India , including an extended period of participant-observation fieldwork, interviews and focus groups. It is intended to contribute to literatures of critical development by exploring: a) socio-spatial changes occurring within organizations as women are hired; b) constructions of gender inside NGOs; and c) the implications of gendered approaches to development for target populations and NGO employees.

The student assigned to the project needs to be pursuing a degree in geography at Texas A&M, and would hold a research assistantship in his/her first year as part of the NSF grant (academic year 2007-2008) and in the second year through the Department of Geography . Language skills in Hindi and/or Marwari would be a plus. Duties will include travel to India for data collection between semesters, and assistance with: 1) data review, coding, and analysis of collected quantitative and qualitative data; 2) investigation of secondary literatures; and 3) manuscript production during the academic year.

The Department of Geography at Texas A&M offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the areas of human-environment interactions, geography education, human geography, biogeography, GIScience and remote sensing, and physical geography. Five human-environment geographers are on staff and supervise around 9 students currently working on masters and doctoral degrees. The five faculty are Dr. Andrew Millington, Dr. Christian Brannstrom, Dr. Wendy Jepson, Dr. Will Heyman and myself.
